Guitar Lessons

Guitar is one of the most popular instruments for kids and teens in Roanoke today! Whether you’re interested in learning acoustic worship songs, classic rock riffs, blues, or modern pop hits, we aim to provide the best guitar lesson experience in Roanoke, VA!

Learning guitar doesn’t have to be hard! Roanoke Music School is a very warm, friendly, and patient place to learn and we are ready to help you work on the most important aspects of becoming the guitar player you’ve always wanted to be!

All of our guitar lessons are taught by an experienced instructor who also has years of performing experience.

Craigslist, Amazon, eBay, and Reverb.com are great places to find affordable guitars. You can often find a quality beginner acoustic or electric guitar for around $150–$300. We recommend choosing an instrument that stays in tune and feels comfortable to play.

We do suggest avoiding very inexpensive “toy” guitars or starter packs from big box stores, as they can be difficult to keep in tune and harder for beginners to play. A well-made, properly set-up guitar makes learning more enjoyable and helps students progress faster.

If you’re unsure what to purchase, we’re always happy to guide Roanoke families toward reliable starter options that set students up for success.

If you are ready to start, you have nothing to lose, as we only want students who truly want to be here and we will not commit you to a long-term contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN GUITAR LESSONS?

We treat every student as an individual, with personal musical needs and goals. We make it a priority to tailor how we teach and what we teach to your individual needs.

‍If you enroll here for guitar lessons, we will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child. Together, we will develop a plan to achieve your goals! We love beginners, so even if you don’t know where to begin, we can help!

WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC CAN I LEARN?

We teach all styles, from rock, pop, jazz, and blues to metal, country and classical guitar – on acoustic guitars. ‍

ARE YOU QUALIFIED?

‍We are highly qualified, have teaching experience, and most importantly, have a passion for teaching. Being a musician doesn’t automatically make you a teacher–that’s why we search for those who are best qualified for mentoring our music students!

We search the entire area for the top teachers, who embody the high values at Roanoke Music School. Most importantly, we strive to relate our teaching to each individual student’s learning style. We have years of professional performance and teaching experience. In addition to our teaching credentials, we have warm personalities, are extremely friendly, and strive to get to know each student and their parents on a personal level.

WHAT'S THE #1 REASON TO STUDY GUITAR AT THE MUSIC SCHOOL?

We are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student’s favorite type of music. Whether you’re playing in local bands, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to the piano after many years, we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR?

Every student progresses at a different pace, but most beginners can start playing simple songs within the first few months of guitar lessons. With consistent weekly lessons and regular practice at home, students typically build strong foundational skills within the first year.

Learning guitar is a long-term skill that develops over time. Some students enjoy playing for fun and personal growth, while others choose to pursue more advanced techniques and performance opportunities. Our goal is to help each student in Roanoke build confidence, enjoy the process, and steadily improve at a pace that feels encouraging and achievable.

I DON’T HAVE ANY MUSICAL BACKGROUND OR ABILITY. CAN I STILL HELP MY CHILD PRACTICE?

‍Yes. Even if you don’t have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day the student will progress. Lesson videos/notes will also be sent to the parents after each lesson to help them understand what the child is working on and how they can help.
